Luke Hathaway’s text is a queer and trans-y reenactment of the devotional rhythms of the Medieval hymn Membra Jesu nostri, as set to music by Dietrich Buxtehude in 1680. A work of spiritual reclamation and erotic celebration, this reanimation of Buxtehude’s seven cantatas celebrates the quotidian rhythms of caregiving and acknowledges the agony of grief. With an afterword by singer/scholar Daniel Cabena.

Luke Hathaway is a trans and queer poet/librettist/performer. He has collaborated with composers Colin Labadie, Benton Roark, Zachary Wadsworth, and James Rolfe, as well as with DaPoPo Theatre, to bring his mythopoeic word-worlds to the stage. With Daniel Cabena he is co-artistic-director of ANIMA, a metamorphosing ensemble that creates and commissions new works inspired by early-music sources. Luke’s book The Affirmations: poems was released by Biblioasis in 2022, and recognized in The Times, London, as a best book of the year. Luke teaches English and Creative Writing at Saint Mary’s University in Kjipuktuk/Halifax.

Daniel Cabena sings, writes, and teaches. He is also a curator of texts and music; and with Luke Hathaway he shares the artistic direction of ANIMA. Together they program concerts, commission new works of text and music, and create new works for the ear and for the stage. Daniel teaches vocal pedagogy and early music history and works with singers, one-on-one and in groups, at Wilfrid Laurier University and at the Laurier Academy of Music and Arts. Daniel’s music-making and teaching are informed by the Alexander Technique, in which field he is a teacher. He also makes music with his hands, playing modern and Baroque violin and viola as well as vièle and recorders.

Jennifer Lynn Still composes poems with physicality in the Red River Valley, Treaty 1 territory, Winnipeg. She is the author of several handmade chapbooks and three poetry books, Girlwood (Brick Books, 2011), Comma (Book*hug, 2017) and Saltations (Thistledown, 2005), a meditation on her matrilineal mixed Métis/European heritage. Her current project, an illuminated manuscript composed with pinholes, a light table, electric typewriter and carbon sheets, was projected inside The Star Factory Planetarium (University of Manitoba) and installed at The Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba and Aceart Inc.

Legs will appear as a video installation in collaboration with artists Christine Fellows and Chantel Mierau in late fall 2022.

Anita Lahey’s memoir The Last Goldfish: A True Tale of Friendship was published in 2020 by Biblioasis. Her other books include The Mystery Shopping Cart: Essays on Poetry and Culture (Palimpsest Press, 2013) and two Véhicule Press poetry collections: Spinning Side Kick (2011) and Out to Dry in Cape Breton (2006). The latter was shortlisted for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry and the Ottawa Book Award. Anita is also a journalist and series editor of the annual anthology Best Canadian Poetry. She lives in Ottawa with her family.

Pauline Conley studied fine art at the University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University, and English literature at Thompson Rivers University, and has worked extensively in the cultural sector as an artist, curator, administrator, fundraiser and teacher. Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout western Canada and Ontario. She has worked as an artist for several organizations, including the global network WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing), using illustrations, graphics, text and video to support the explanation of systems, plans and data, and the creation of popular materials. At 19, Isabella Wang is a two-time finalist and the youngest writer short-listed for The New Quarterly’s Edna Staebler Essay Contest, and she holds a Pushcart Prize nomination for poetry. Her poetry and prose have appeared in over twenty literary journals, including Contemporary Verse 2, GEEZ Magazine, Canthius, Looseleaf Magazine, Plenitude, The /tEmz/ Review, and carte blanche. She is pursuing a double major in English and World Literature at Simon Fraser University. As well, she is as an assistant editor with Room magazine, serving as the Youth Advocate for the Federation of BC Writers, and co-ordinating the bi-weekly Dead Poets Reading Series with the Vancouver Public Library. This is her debut poetry chapbook.

She holds a PhD in English Language and Literature from the University of Waterloo, where she has been teaching academic and creative writing since 2015. Her research focuses on Iraqi North American women’s life narratives of trauma and migration. Her memoir on the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, Waiting for the Rain, is due for publication in 2019.
